What is SCADA in Electrical Engineering?
Nowadays, internet and intelligentization become the mainstream of the times, also in the electrical engineering field, computer control and automation system , like PLC, SCADA system, microcomputer protection device etc, play significant role in engineering project and power system operation.
SCADA system is short for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, it is a control system based on computer process control and dispatching automation system. By monitoring and controlling equipments, SCADA system has the data acquisition, equipment control, measure and parameters adjustment, monitor and control system covering large geographical areas, and all kinds of signal alarm and other functions.
The concept of SCADA is developed as a universal means of remote access to a variety of local control modules. The systems are mostly used for the implementation of monitoring and control system of an equipment or a plant in several industries, such as power plants, water and waste control etc.
Components of SCADA Systems
1, Supervisory computers
Supervisory computers is the core part of SCADA system, it works by gathering data on the process and sending control commands to the process.
2, Remote terminal units (RTUs)
Remote terminal units, RTUs for short, it connects to sensors and actuators in the process, covering the signals to digital data and sending digital data to the supervisory system.
3, Programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
Programmable logic controllers, PLCs for short, same way like RTUs, it’s also connected to sensors and actuators in the process, usually used in place of RTUs as field devices. Cause PLC has more sophisticated embedded control capabilities, and more economical, versatile, flexible and configurable than special-puposed RTUs.
4, Human-machine interface (HMI)
The human-machine interface, HMI for short, presents process data and plant information to a human operator. It is regards as the operator window of the supervisory system, the human operators monitor and control the process through HMI.
5, Communication infrastructure
The communication infrastructure provides connectivity to the supervisory system to the RTUs and PLCs. It’s kind of bridge for data among supervisory computer, the field data interface devices and control units.
Application of Scada Systems for Electric Engineering Project
Scada system is type of automation system for electrical distribution, it provides the functions, like real-time view into operations, data tending and logging, maintaining desired voltages, currents and power factors, generating alarms etc to maximize the power distribution system efficiency. It is able to perform automatic monitoring, protecting and controlling to varies of equipments in electrical engineering items. The SCADA function could have substation control, feeder control and end user load control etc.
